July 3, 2009—A former surgical tech may have exposed thousands of patients to Hepatitis C after taking syringes filled with fentanyl, injecting herself with the powerful narcotic, and replacing the syringes with a saline solution.
Kristen Parker tested positive for Hepatitis C, which she believes she contracted from heroin use and sharing dirty needles while living in New Jersey in 2008.
Parker was employed at Rose Medical Center from October 2008 to April 2009.
Rose Medical Center has contacted 4,700 patients who underwent surgery during this period. Nine patients already have tested positive for Hepatitis C.
An FDA official reported that Rose Medical Center knew Parker had tested positive for Hepatitis C and was counseled on how to limit her exposure to patients. |
