July 18, 2009—The hepatitis scare in Colorado that has prompted Rose Medical Center and Audubon Ambulatory Surgery Center to recommend certain patients undergo testing for the disease has expanded to New York and Houston after government officials warned the surgery tech who prompted the public health alert also worked in hospitals in these states.

Kristen Parker is alleged to have swapped clean needles for dirty ones in hospital operating rooms to feed her painkiller addiction. She is accused of taking syringes filled with fentanyl, a powerful narcotic painkiller, and replacing them with used syringes filled with a saline solution.

Officials now are aware that Kristen Parker worked at Northern Weschester Hospital in Mount Kisco, New York and Christus St. John Hospital outside Houston, Texas. The news prompted Northern Westchester Hospital to advise 2,800 patients who had surgery there between October 8, 2007 and February 28, 2008 to get tested for Hepatitis C.

July 3, 2009—A former surgical tech may have exposed thousands of patients to Hepatitis C after taking syringes filled with fentanyl, injecting herself with the powerful narcotic, and replacing the syringes with a saline solution.

Kristen Parker tested positive for Hepatitis C, which she believes she contracted from heroin use and sharing dirty needles while living in New Jersey in 2008.

Parker was employed at Rose Medical Center from October 2008 to April 2009.

Rose Medical Center has contacted 4,700 patients who underwent surgery during this period. Nine patients already have tested positive for Hepatitis C.

An FDA official reported that Rose Medical Center knew Parker had tested positive for Hepatitis C and was counseled on how to limit her exposure to patients.
